Paper Doll Fashion Art Program for Young Women at Risk
Santa Margarita Detention Center
Lima, Peru

The Paper Doll Fashion Art Program is the first of its kind -- an art and design training program for trafficked girls and young women at risk. First produced by Art in a Box in Cambodia, the Paper Doll Fashion Art Program was expanded in 2011, when Art in a Box brought the program to young women at the Santa Margarita Detention Center in Lima, Peru. Coordinated with logistical support from the United States Embassy, Lima, the program promotes creative and educational opportunities for girls between 14 and 18 years old, who have been sentenced to Santa Margarita by the court for felony convictions.
Inspired by Peru’s renowned textile traditions and the universal appeal of dolls, the program enables young women to regain their self-esteem, develop their talents and learn art and design skills. The young women are working towards an exhibition of their artwork.
Young women at the Santa Margarita Detention Center work with Resource Packages and Templates provided by Art in a Box for the Paper Doll Fashion Art Program.
