How we help
• Partnership Art in a Box works closely with schools, non-profit organizations and community
organizations to build partnerships that help children and their families
through art and education. Together we help people— often the least visible, most vulnerable, and poorest people— to find the dignity and beauty of their own self expression.
• Art Classes We conduct art classes that support creativity and empowerment for middle or
high school students at risk or in need. We also conduct Master Classes for
college students.
• Art Kits Art in a Box has provided Art Kits to village schools, a village library, slum
communities, AIDS orphans, hospices and clinics, schools for the disabled, a
Native American Reservation, a shelter for homeless families in the United
States-- and to children in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake. Each portable box contains art supplies to sustain an ongoing art program and
can be utilized almost anywhere.
• Art Exhibitions Art in a Box organizes international, local, on-site and on-line art exhibitions
featuring artwork created by students in our programs in collaboration with our
local partners. We have produced 7 student art exhibitions at public galleries or urban schools
that have moved and inspired more than 4,828 audience members. Our Online
Student Art Gallery on our website currently features 17 permanent student art
exhibitions- and has been seen by more than 8,460 visitors! more
• Innovative Art Curricula Art in a Box designs and implements specialized, project-based art curricula for
communities at risk or in need. Our multi-unit curricula and stand alone
workshops, Art & Literacy for Children at Risk, Environmental Art Education, and the Paper Doll Fashion Art, combine skills training in both traditional and emerging art forms to enable
students to envision a future while honoring their traditions.
• Teacher Training Our teacher training workshops enable local teachers and staff to continue the
art programs at their schools, clinics or community organizations.
• Peer-to-Peer Art Mentoring Through mentoring activities, we help older students gain leadership experience
and empower younger students with mentors from within their culture.
• Community Involvement We involve communities in our art programs through educational programs, art
exhibitions and public art projects.
• Public Art Projects Art in a Box produces public art projects, such as public murals and the banner
project.
• Publication projects Art in a Box publishes books of art and testimony through our publishing
imprint, Heron-on Hudson-Press. The book publications support student literacy, celebrate creative expression,
and include untold stories in the historical record. more

We believe that art builds the self esteem of children and assists in their empowerment
and recovery, improves communication between families, teachers, caregivers and
children, helps children learn new communication and cooperation skills and
enriches communities. Art speaks truth to power and delights the human spirit.
